My Week in Review 1/20/18-1/27/18

It's hard to say, but I had several duds this week.  I was super excited with each book I chose, only to be let down by a few.  I don't post anything here lower than a 3 on my scale - but if you are interested in the books that just did not make the cut, I have my GoodReads widget to the right of this post.

That being said, I did read some pretty good books and I am glad to share these with you.

Bless Your Heart by Kimbra Swain - 4 Stars ****

Scorned by her family. Banished by her kind. Hunted by zealots.

Where does an exiled Fairy Queen hide?

A remote mountain cabin, the seedy underbelly of a metropolis, or an uninhabited island. All would be good choices, however, after hundreds of years on the run, the daughter of Oberon, King of the Wild Fairies, signs a binding contract with the zealots that hunt her. In exchange, they allow her to settle down in the last place anyone would look for fairy royalty.

Adopting the name Grace Ann Bryant, the Queen buys a double-wide and moves into a trailer park in the one-horse town of Shady Grove, Alabama. Her contract requires her to lend aid to the local sheriff, Dylan Riggs, when supernatural problems arise.

But when two children go missing, the humans point to the trailer park queen helping the sheriff, and the zealots point at the exiled fairy. Grace must decide whether to fight for her innocence or break her contract returning to life on the run.

Wander - by Orlando A Sanchez 4 Stars ****

He’s not the hero you want. He’s the monster you need.

When a new strain of the deadly drug, Redrum creates UV resistant vampires, the streets of New York City are flooded with the mindless creatures searching for blood—human blood. The NYTF and Dark Council refuse to deal with menace and contact the Night Wardens expecting results. What they get is a dark mage with nothing to lose.

Now Grey Stryder-a dying dark mage and rogue Night Warden must join Koda, a short tempered, trigger-happy assassin to clean the streets of New York, find the source of Redrum, and keep humanity off the menu, before it’s too late.

Together they will be become the heroes the city needs-but no one wants.

Token Huntress by Kia Carrington-Russell
4 Stars ****

The sun’s light dimmed many centuries before; now in the year of 2,341 rampant vampires stalk their victims in a half-lit world. Humanity has been overtaken by a new society: one comprised of vampires, the supernatural beings that hunt them, and the remaining humans they fight over. The laws and rules that once bound our world have long since been lost.

Now, the Hunter Guild struggle to stay one step ahead of the Vampire Council.

Esmore, Token Huntress, has exceeded all expectations at only 18 years of age. She is fearless leader to her team, and she is relentless in her pursuit of the enemy. There is only one problem: Esmore is struggling to repress the growing darkness that seduces her from within. Esmore takes another step into the darkness when she encounters a teasing, tantalizing -- utterly unignorable -- vampire.
The lines between right and wrong are blurred further as Esmore gives into her temptation, and her reality becomes deliciously tainted both with evil and with lust.

Born of Water by A L Knorr - 4 Stars ****

A mysterious shipwreck could unlock ancient powers… or send her to a watery grave.

Targa MacAuley feels more at home on dry land than in the watery realm of her mermaid ancestors. After 17 years on solid ground, she fears she’ll never grow into the creature her mother hoped she’d become. To keep her mom’s homesickness and true identity under wraps, Targa signs on for a mysterious salvage dive in the Baltic Sea.

Her plan to blend in with the rest of the crew is spoiled when she catches the eye of a handsome local. A freak accident and a strange connection to the ancient shipwreck below attract even more unwanted attention. With both her mom’s secret—and her life—in danger, Targa must finally find the courage to unleash the currents surging deep within.

Destiny Gift by Juliana Haygert - 3 Stars ***

Her gift will bring light to a world of darkness...

In 2047, the world exists in permanent darkness. Nineteen-year-old Nadine, a student at NYU, works hard to better her family's life in the harsh conditions. When she starts having strange visions of someone named Victor, she tries to ignore the flashes, afraid she might be going insane.

But when she bumps into a very real Victor, her entire world shifts. Her visions taking a turn for the worse, Nadine is bombarded with prophecies of eerie fates, unfamiliar gods, sharp-clawed demons... and instructions. Along with the reluctant Victor, she finds her path entwined with yet another man, Micah, who may be able to shed light on her dark revelations.

Directed down an unbelievable path of magic and mayhem, the three must unravel clues from the visions in order to restore an ancient creed. The chance to bring sunlight to the world again is in Nadine's gift, but only if the evil forces behind the darkness don't manage to stop her first.

If you see something you'd like to try, please let me know how you enjoy it.  I hope you are reading something great.

As always, thanks for stopping by.
