My Week in Review: 6/17/17-6/24/17

Last week was another mixed bag for me.  I ended up with half of the books I read being zombie books (are you really surprised?) that I really enjoyed - and the other half an assortment of genre's that were just meh.

Here are the books I enjoyed:

Green Fields: Extinction by Adrienne Lecter - 5 Stars*****

If you need some zombies killed, who do you call? The Lucky Thirteen.

A few weeks have passed since the events in Aurora, and Bree, Nate, and the gang are back on the road. The odd mall to raid, cattle to herd, provisions to deliver—all no match for our trusty group of scavengers. The world is yours for the taking when killing zombies becomes routine. Yet with temperatures rising in late spring, a new menace appears on the post-apocalyptic theater of war.

Roving bands, thousands of zombies strong are scouring the country, and already the first settlements are going dark. In a world where every human life is valuable, losing hundreds at once is not an option. What makes the zombies band together like that—and, more importantly, why are the tough ones even harder to kill than mere months ago?

Bree may wish that she’s just paranoid, but she can’t shake the suspicion that finding a cure may not be the only cause the government is pouring resources into. But to what end?

The Half-Assed Wizard by Gary Jonas - 4 Stars****

A couple of jerks wake me up at the crack of noon. Seems my klepto uncle stole an ancient deck of Tarot cards from a high-powered wizard, and too many losers want to ruin my day to get them back.
The cards are cool, so I check them out, but my magic-happy cousin, Sabrina, tells me I'm not supposed to touch them. Oops. Too late. Now the damn cards are tuned to me, and if someone else wants to use them, I have to die. Why couldn't she have led with that information?

Magic was never my scene, but my dad is one of the most powerful wizards in the world, so I've got unrealized potential if I ever bother to apply myself. I'd rather power nap, but with wizards, gunslingers, and cannibalistic shark dudes coming at me, that's not gonna happen.

They say I'm a half-assed wizard, but if I don't play my cards right, I'm gonna get my whole ass killed.

Dead in L.A. by Stephen Knight - 4 Stars****

When Hollywood screenwriter and former Border Patrolman Robert Wallace recovers from a sickness that had left him bedridden for days, he finds that his wife has been killed, his son is missing, and Los Angeles has been overrun by hordes of carnivorous corpses.

Only this is no movie set. It’s the zombie apocalypse, and the City of Angels is now the hunting ground of the dead. Their prey: the living. Whether on high-paid movie stars or penniless bums on Skid Row, the dead want to feed, and human beings are the only item on their menu. Wallace embarks in a desperate search for his son while trying to evade the legions of ghouls that totter across the crumbling ruins of Los Angeles.

Welcome to Hell A!

Reluctant Hood by Kendrai Meeks - 3 Stars***

Gerwalta Kline has wished all her life to escape the weight of being named after her infamous ancestor Die Verräterin, the betrayer, better known by humans as Little Red Riding Hood. Unlike the fairy tale heroine, the historical figure defiled her legacy, leading to her being executed for the high crime of mating a werewolf. Desperate to keep history from repeating itself, Geri turns away from her legacy, denies her birthright, defies her controlling mother, and endeavors to live as a human.

Fate is a fickle thing however, and it almost seems like Gerwalta’s name is her curse. In Chicago, she soon encounters Tobias Somfield, a wolf far away from his packlands in England, tracking another of his kind Tobias claims was kidnapped by a cabal of vampires. The last thing Geri wants is to get involved with a lone wolf’s problems, but circumstances don’t give her much choice. Tobias is right about one thing; the vampires in Chicago are up to something. Whatever it is spells troubles for hoods and wolves alike. Even if it means working with a wolf she can’t help but find attractive, and knowing from experience the danger of stepping off that cliff, Geri finds herself acting the part of a reluctant hood.

Fast Walkers by J.D. Bishop - 3 Stars***

Rebecca's father works for a shadowy arm of the United States Government. He stays gone for weeks at a time and often comes home late.

But she's never had a reason to question his line of work... until one fateful night. Riding with a group of friends, she gets into a car accident that results in a man's death.

What follows next is a group of mysterious events that leaves Rebecca and her friends with more questions than answers.  People are coming back to life, eating human flesh, even dining on their own family members.

Rebecca and her friends are determined to get to the bottom of what's going on.... but they'll have survive the horde of undead first!

Hellspawn by Ricky Fleet - 3 Stars***

10.35 AM, September 14th 2015. Portsmouth, England.

A global particle physics experiment releases a pulse of unknown energy with catastrophic results. The sanctity of the grave has been sundered and a million graveyards expel their tenants from eternal slumber. The world is unaware of the impending apocalypse, Governments crumble and armies are scattered to the wind under the onslaught of the dead.

Kurt Taylor, a self-employed plumber, witnesses the start of the horrifying outbreak. Desperate to reach his family before they fall victim to the ever growing horde of shambling corruption, he flees the scene. In a society with few guns, how can people hope to survive the endless waves of zombies that seek to consume every living thing?

With ingenuity, planning and everyday materials, the group forge their way and strike back at the Hellspawn legions. Rescues are mounted, but not all survivors are benevolent, the evil that is in all men has been given free rein in this new, dead world.

With both the living and dead to contend with, is there any hope for the Taylor family?

That's it for me.  I hope you're reading something great!

As always, thanks for stopping by.
Michelle
